A PRAYER (upon all our efforts): "Let Thy work appear unto Thy servants, and Thy glory unto their children. And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish Thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish Thou it." (Psalm 90: 16-17). CONCERNING THE SUNDAY SCHOOL The Sunday School, or Church School as it is now designated to include week-day activities, represents the Church's program for Christian Education. This has held a foremost place with us from the early beginnings nearly a century and a quarter ago, when Sunday School was held in the home of one of the pioneers. Our Church School meets each Sunday at 9.40 a.m., in Beginners, Primary, Junior and Senior Departments. We are fortunate in having a consecrated and loyal staff of teachers and officers. A Special Day in recognition of this important work is planned for late September in both Sunday School and Church. NURSERY and JUNIOR CONGREGATION For the convenience of parents, children of Nursery age (up to 5 years) are provided for during the Morning Church hour. The Junior Congregation (5 to 11 years) meets with the regular congregation at 11 o'clock and leaves at the second hymn. THE LONG AND HONORED PAST Previous to 1843 Sunday School was held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Emory. 1843 Land donated for a Church and Cemetery. 1892 First brick Church erected: Later destroyed by fire. 1907 Second brick Church erected, which served congregation and Sunday School for nearly fifty years, the last services being held June 26, 1955. MORE RECENT It was during the pastorates of Rev. M. A. Bury and Rev. Dr. H. W. Outerbridge that mention began to be made of a building program for the future. In 1948 it was decided to extend and renovate the church building. The Stewards, with Charles Scheer, chairman executed this improvement. The growth of the congregation including the Sunday School, due to a rapid increase of population in the Aldershot area, soon necessitated further steps towards expansion. Events began to move rapidly and at, a largely attended congregational meeting held on May 1, 1951, a Building Committee was set up with Earl Sovereign as chairman, and Mrs. Roy Smale as secretary. It is impossible to narrate all succeeding events. Much spade work was done by the Building Committee: the Building Fund was established on a sound basis with Emory Home as treasurer: additional land (for parking) was secured to the east of the Church. East and West Plains became separate self-supporting charges on July 1, 1954. After yoeman service had been performed by a great number of interested members, the Building plans emerged from their initial stage. Tenders were called for in late May, 1955, and the main contract was let to the Beatty-Hall Construction Co. Mr. Wm. [William] W. Allen, M.R.A.I.C., had previously been engaged as architect. All this was made possible by a successful financial campaign in the Autumn of 1954, directed by Burton Crocker. The "site" committee was headed by Ross Peart. The total estimated cost including furnishings was set at the provisional figure of $140,000. A committee on "interior" was chaired by Douglas Marrett. The people gave generously of time, talent and substance and the present attractive and worshipful church edifice is the result. If any one person is to be singled out for unusual devotion to the task in hand, by unanimoos consent, it would be Earl Sovereign, the Building Committee Chairman.
