OCTOBER 1951 St Matthew's Anniversary by Rev. C. S. Wright During the last two weeks of September, the Anglicans of this parish have celebrated the ninetieth anniversary of the church. Inspiring services were held, with special preachers invited for the great occasion. A booklet containing the history of Aldershot and of St. Matthew's Church has been prepared, copies of which may be obtained from members of the Evening Guild and Women's Auxiliary. This booklet will be of value and interest to every family in Aldershot. An essay contest is being arranged for children of the schools; details of rules and prizes will be released October 15th. New residents of Aldershot will be given a hearty Christian welcome at the services of St. Matthew's Church and in the various organizations. October 21st is Youth and Children's Day - the Children's Service will be held at 9.45 a.m. October 28th is Laymen's Sunday and the Laymen of St. Matthew's have a fine tradition which is observed on this day at 8.30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. For the information of newcomers to Aldershot, the Rector's phone number is 4218. A growing community like ours has its own particular problems and opportunities. An attitude of co-operation will produce the progress and stability we desire. We extend best wishes to the Aldershot Community Council on the first publication of this paper. Last communion held at church, Sunday, April 17 was a day of "lasts" for The Church of St. Matthew, Aldershot. The three Communion services, at 8 a.m.. 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. were the last to be held in the old church, a part of which was built almost 105 years ago. The building is soon to be torn down to make room for a new structure. At the 11 a.m. service members of the Women's Auxiliary, an organization which has been active in the life of the church for over 60 years, partook of corporate Communion for the last time in the old church At 7 p.m. Bishop C. R. H. Wilkinson and Mr. F. J. T. Broadbent, Diocesan Registrar conducted a service of de-consecration and the reading of the appropriate documents. In the afternoon, men of the parish arrived with hammers, screw drivers and ether tools to begin the work of dismantling the interior furnishings of the church. Services will be held in the parish hall until the new church is completed. Sod-turning will be at 10:40 a.m., Sunday. April 24.
