... ago, and the teaching staff has increased the same way. But this growth, so very gratifying, brings its own problems and the Advisory Council are faced with a very urgent question of how to provide room for the congregation and school if the increase continues. Far from any likelihood of its abating, everything points to a speeding up of the influx of new members in the church. The church families have already grown from 40 to 200. Fortunately a committee appointed to go into the matter have secured a large parcel of land behind the church, one large enough to make it possible to build a large parish hall and still have enough to enlarge or rebuild the church. So the rector and congregation approach the ninetieth anniversary with feelings of pride and responsibility. They are proud of the heritage which is theirs from holy men and women who have gone before; proud of the fact that they are meeting the challenge of the present time with cool heads and mature minds. Though the task which is set before them is great so will their determination be great, that through the grace of God and by united effort, the necessary expansion will be accomplished. How appropriate are the words in Isaiah, "Enlarge the place of thy tent and let them stretch forth the curtains of thy habitation; spare not, lengthen thy cords and strenghen thy stakes, for thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left. Copied from the Ninetieth Anniversary Book of St. Matthew's St. Matthews Anglican Church Congregation approves plans for extension, April 3, 1952 A well attended special vestry meeting of St. Matthew's congregation voted acceptance of plans submitted for church extension. The building committee, H. R. Ford, J. W. Gavin, E. Roberts, A. V. Laidman, Dr. G. W. Spinks and the Rev. C. S. Wright, presented the architect's drawings, showing a 28-foot extension of the present church, with a connecting area, and a parish hall 40 by 85 feet. The new church extension will follow the lines of the present 90 year old church. The special vestry authorized the church officers to raise the necessary funds for the project. The plans will be submitted to the Bishop of Niagara and the extension committee of the Synod, and when approved, work will begin. Much of the work will be done by voluntary labour in the parish. Many men skilled in various building trades have already offered their assistance. Photo of: First Choir. Back row: Rev. H. Leake, Alfred Read, William Crouchley, Ted Wainwright, John Sherwood.
