HOLY ROSARY NEWS - BISHOP IS HONORED ON JUBILEE Laity of diocese hold celebrations Hamilton - Sept. 22, 1962. The leader of almost 175,000 Catholics was honored here yesterday by more than 1,000 of the flock who assisted at a Pontical High Mass of Thanksgiving offered by Bishop Joseph F. Ryan at the Cathedral of Christ the King, and at a jubilee dinner afterwards at the Sheraton Connaught Hotel. Speaking to a capacity crowd at the Cathedral, Most Rev. Francis V. Allen, auxiliary bishop of Toronto, outlined the office and duties of a bishop and showed how faithfully Bishop Ryan had fulfilled his office during the past quarter century. Bishop Allen also spoke of the importance of the forthcoming Ecumenical Council and asked all to offer sacrifice and pray for its success. At the dinner which followed, E. P. Carney, who acted in the capacity of chairman for the evening presented Bishop Ryan with a financial from the laity of the diocese. Words of congratulations were brought to His Excellency by His Worship Mayor Lloyd D. Jackson from the city of Hamilton, Mrs. H. A. Lippert, Kitchener, from the diocesan Catholic Women's League, and L. G. Latchford, Hamilton, from the diocesan Holy Name Society. Quest speaker for the evening, Leo Whitney, Q.C. of Waterloo paid special tribute to the great work done by Bishop Ryan during his episcopate and referred to him as the "Bishop of education". He praised the Bishop's untiring efforts on behalf of Catholic education and traced his establishment of schools from the elementary level right up to the new university in the diocese, officially opened last Sunday - St. Jerome's College. Mr. Whitney concluded by saying: "Today we bring you silver. May we bring you gold, yes even diamonds". One part of the program which particularly appealed to the large audience was Cathedral Girls' High School choir, under the directon of Sister Mary Ambrose, and accompanied by Sister Mary Immaculata, who adapted words, appropriate for the occasion, to the tunes of popular songs. In his remarks at the conclusion of the program, Bishop Ryan said that the successes of the past quarter Century were due to the wholehearted co-operation of all in the diocese - bishops, priests, religious and laity. He also strongly emphasised the need of equal government support for Catholic education. His concluding remarks centered around the forthcoming council. He pointed out its purpose and asked all to offer daily prayers for its success. A clergy luncheon on Sept. 18 was the concluding phase of the jubilee festivities.
