PARK AVENUE CHURCH - To Hold Missionary Convention Jan. 20. Burlington Gazette, January l8th 1963 A four day missionary convention will begin on Sunday, January 20. One of the missionary statesmen taking part will be the Rev. William L. Thompson. A conversation with Dr. Harry Strachan, Founder and General Director of Latin America Mission, in Toronto, Ontario changed the route of his life, and today he can look back on the rich experience of many years of missionary service in Latin America. Mr. Thompson was serving as a young pastor in Toronto. On one of his trips, Dr. Strachan met him, and seeing the possibilities in the young preacher, called him aside and said "Young man, what are you doing here? It was as though he said "Why are you not on the mission field, where the need of workers is so great?". The Lord spoke to the young preacher through this question of the veteran missionary, and in early 1926 he was on his way to Costa Rica to join the staff of Latin America Mission. Prior to his Toronto pastorate, Mr. Thompson had served as assistant to the well-known preacher, Dr. P. W. Phillpott in Hamilton, Ontario. During the past thirty-six years Mr. Thompson has served in various important capacities: pastor of the Templo Biblico, San Jose, Costa Rica; Field Director of Latin America Mission in Colombia, and Home director in the States. For years he was active in the Evangelistic Campaign Division of the Mission. Through extensive travels in this connection, Mr. Thompson has become well-known in many countries of Latin America. He is now in charge of the Mission's work in Canada. The missionary participants will actually arrive on Saturday, January 19, and will be guests at a men's supper to be held in the Fellowship Hall of the church at 6.30 p.m. The supper will be followed by a prayer service beginning at S:30 p.m. The Sunday services will be held at 9:45 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 5:45 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. The week night services are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with a pictorial presentation of various areas of the world, followed by the word pictures of the world's needs. Unusual missionary displays will be set up in the church parlour. The public is cordially invited to attend. Park Avenue Church is located at the corner of Park Avenue and Townsend Ave., directly behind the Aldershot High School. The minister is Rev. William Sift.
