PARK AVENUE CHURCH - LARGE GATHERING AT DEDICATION OF NEW CHURCH, Aldershot, June 12th close to 200 persons filled Park Avenue Church to overflowing last night for the opening service and dedication. Those who could not be accomodated in the church auditorium listened over a loud speaker system in the basement Sunday School room. W. A. Pett told the congregation how the church was literally the outcome of prayer, originating in the minds of a handful of men and women who had been holding cottage prayer meetings since 1948. Tribute was paid to William Jackson, a retired contractor, who was responsible for the planning and much of the actual building of the interdenominational church. The church is built in cottage style, and the work was done by members of the prayer group. D. Merle P. Estabrooks, president of the Associated Gospel Churches, Kingston, formally opened and dedicated the church. Greetings were brought by a number of visiting clergymen, including: Brigadier H. H. Newman, Salvation Army, Hamilton; Rev. Ernest Falconbridge, Freeman Gospel Church; Rev. E. J. Bailey, Christian Missionary Alliance, Toronto; Rev. T. Melville Bailey, Southgate Presbyterian Church Hamilton; Rev. Thomas Summers, Hespeler, Ontario. The speaker was the Rev. Robert M. Gordon, Oakwood Baptist Church, Toronto. Robert Green spoke on behalf of the newly organized Sunday School, and extended an invitation to the congregation to attend the opening on Sunday June 14th, at 9.45 a. m. when an open session will be conducted by Rev. A. King. Assisting in the service were the string section of the Delta Tabernacle orchestra with a violin solo by Mrs. R. Knechtel. Vocal soloist was Cecil Lyness of Guelph. Open house will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 o'clock, and a special evangelical meeting will be held each evening next week at 8 p.m. Rev. Thomas Summers will conduct the meetings. Drive-in Services at Park Avenue Church Sunday July 2 marks the beginning of the drive-in church services sponsored by Park Avenue Church in Aldershot. The drive-in services were conducted last summer during the months of July and August with evident success as nearly 200 attended regularly. The program is not unlike that conducted indoors with the exception that most of the people sit in their cars to listen. There is congregational singing, special music and the preaching of a Gospel message. A portable platform is used to hold the participants, the organ and the public address system. The services begin at 7.30 each Sunday evening and last approximately one hour. They are held in the Dominion Store parking area, Plains Road West, Aldershot. Some guest speakers will be featured during the summer, but most of the services will be conducted by the pastor, Rev. William Sifft. The indoor services at Park Avenue Church, situated at Park Avenue and Townsend Avenue, include the two morning worship services at 8.45 and 11.00, and the Sunday School held at 9.45. The prayer service is held Wednesday at 8.00pm. During the month of July the congregation of the Aldershot Presbyterian Church will be worshipping in Park Avenue Church. from the Spectator June 29, 1961
