SCHOOL NEWS, May 9th, 1951 Board approves plans for ALDERSHOT SCHOOL The Aldershot School Board met last night, a week ahead of Schedule, to expedite the progress of the new school here. W. A. Magee, of the firm of George T. Evans, architect, explained the school plans to the members and J. S. Jerome moved their approval. The plans are now almost complete and Mr. Magee reported that tenders would be called in about three weeks. The school will be erected on the north side of Townsend Ave. 100 feet back from the street on a six acre site. There will be five class rooms, a work shop, household science room, office first aid room and teachers room with a kitchen. The building will also contain a playroom 50 feet by 4O feet, with a 12 foot stage across one end. In addition there will be a kindergarten room, which should be particularly attractive with its large semi-circular window seat and patterned mastic tile floor. At the request of T. S. Little, secretary, Mr. Magee agreed to investigate the condition of the boys' washroom at Maplehurst School and to make recommendations for the building of improved facilities. Mr. Magee also undertook to ascertain the size of water mains to be installed at both schools, this information being necessary before application for water can be made to the Inter-Urban Water Board. E. C. Davis moved the acceptance of the tender of Don Hawkins for painting at both schools, on condition that the work be completed before the first week in August. The purchase was authorized of 10 inch manually operated fire gongs for each school, to be used in the event of power failure. SEEK PROPERTY K. C. Scheer and J. S. Jerome reported that the executors of the Jacob Filman estate were not yet prepared to sell to the board an acre of ground on the north boundry of Maplehurst School, as they felt that this might interfere with the disposal of lots in a new survey being laid out in that area. W. Mitchell, chairman, pointed out that if the property were sold to someone else it might cost the board a good deal more to buy it later on. At the suggestion of Trustee Davis, it was agreed to advise the Planning Board that this property is desired for additional school playground. On motion by Trustee Davis, it was agreed to pay cost-of-living bonus to all teachers on the new contracts commencing September 1, using the January cost-of-living index as a basis for calculation. The resignation of Miss Margaret Waumsley, of Maplehurst School was accepted. Clipping of Photo: Public School of East Flamboro Twp. Aldershot, Ontario THE HAMILTON SPECTATOR TUESDAY MAY 22 1951
