The Aldershot News OCTOBER 1951 No. 1 ALDERSHOT COMMUNITY COUNCIL Giant Hallowe'en Frolic At La Salle [LaSalle] Aldershot Council Organized The Aldershot Community Council was organized at an open meeting held on April 23rd at Fairfield School, when the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Hon. Pres., Dr. W. J. Deadman Pres., Robert Pinhay 1st Vice-Pres., George Westbrook 2nd Vice-Pres., W. A. Whelan, 3rd Vice-Pres., Mrs. Earl Klodt, Secretary, Don Grierson Treasurer, Tom Price Executive members: Mrs. Harry Stevenson. Mrs. Norman Robertson, Mrs. Jack Emery, Verne Granby, George Marsh, Gordon Richardson. R. A. Hoey, Neil Poole. J. W. Fitzpatrick, Robert Horn, Morley Klodt. The first membership card in the new Council was presented to guest of honour. Reeve W. A. Bates, and at present there are 400 paid up members. The aims of the Council are as follows: "That this organization shall organize recreational efforts, encourage the best use of present recreational facilities and encourage further program developments and enlarged facilities, wherever the need is indicated and under the most favourable auspices, and promote the general good and welfare of the community." Community Councils are sponsored by The Community Programmes Branch of the Department of Education, which offers assistance in training community leaders in a variety of activities. In spite of illness at home, Ted was out to every practice, coaching the boys, not only in the art of softball, but in the habits of good sportsmanship and clean play. Safety Lanes At Schools George Westbrook and the members of his Traffic and Safety Committee have been untiring in their efforts to effect some Improvement in the hazardous situation created by the speeding traffic in front of our three schools on the highway. Although the local Provincial Police detachment at Dundas has not yet received authority from Toronto to enforce a 30 mile limit in this zone, Mr. Westbrook reports that Inspector A. R. Knight has "given every co-operation in efforts to relieve the situation. White safety crossing lanes have been painted across the highway at each school and Inspector Knight has ordered manually operated stoplights, to be installed should the safety lanes prove ineffective. Aldershot Aces District Champs The New York Giants certainly had nothing on the Aldershot Aces this season, for the Aces went undefeated through the regular schedule and the playdowns in the Midget-Bantam Softball League to win the district championship. The boys, all under 15 years, showed remarkable team spirit and, if they stick together next year, should make a good showing in the O.A.S.A. Midget playdowns. Ted Pendlebury and Earl Perkins coached the team for the Community Council and vote of thanks is extended to the Aldershot Men's Community Club for the loan of their softball equipment. The Aldershot Community Council is planning a giant Hallowe'en Frolic for all the youngsters in the district. Members of the Hallowe'en committee, under the chairmanship of George Westbrook, are busy as beavers these days lining up prizes, candy, refreshments, movies, and to top everything, a real live magician. 7 o'clock on Hallowe'en night, witches and the ghosts and the goblins, as well as all the other weirdly costumed figures, will descend on La Salle Park, which will be especially illuminated for the occasion through the kindness of the Area Hydro Electric Power Commission. First will come the costume judging, with two prizes in each of the following 14 classes: Witches and ghosts, pirates, gypsies, clowns, negroes, nursery people, hard times, grandma and grandpa, bride and groom, national, boy dressed as girl, girl dressed as boy, and miscellaneous. After the prizes have been awarded there will be a great parade all around the ball park, and then refreshments. At 8.30 o'clock, the magician will lead off the entertainment program and he will be followed by movies, ending at half-past nine. The first Aldershot Hallowe'en Frolic promises to be a dandy, so come on out kiddies and enjoy a real Hallowe'en party. Bring Mom and Dad too, as long as they promise not to be frightened by all the NOTE: In the event of bad weather, the frolic will be held the following night, November 1st. Aldershot Loses Valuable Citizen The sympathy of the Aldershot Community Council is extended to Mrs. John O'Brien and her family in their recent bereavement. Mr. O'Brien was a faithful and devoted servant of the community during his 35 years residence, serving as a member of the Council of East Flamboro Township for seven years and as Deputy Reeve for the last two years.
