COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWS. Large Number Enrolled For Swimming Classes Aldershot, June 8, 1951. Over 150 children from five years of age and up have registered for the learn-to-swim classes, being conducted by the Aldershot Community Council at Hidden Valley Pool, Earl Davis, chairman of the campaign announced today. Donates Pool.... Classes are being conducted every Saturday morning throughout the simmer, beginning at 10 o'clock and last Saturday 95 children, five instructors and two life-guards took over the Hidden Valley Pool. George Zarfas, pool manager, stated he would donate the pool for another hour each Saturday if attendance kept increasing, in which case classes would run from 10 am. until noon. Capable Staff.... The classes are well staffed under the chief instructor, Dave Dunbar, well-known swimming instructor at the Hamilton Y.M.C.A. and executive member of the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association. Assisting him is Ted Ross, Burlington, a fourth-year student at Royal Military College, Kingston, who holds a world's life-saving certificate with silver medallion. Mrs. P. Raback, Aldershot, Tonia Parker, Aldersnot, a member of the ornamental swimming and racing team of Hamilton Aquatic Club and Joan Ellis, Aldershot, who holds the Guide's life-saving certificate, are volunteer assistants. It is of interest to note that Miss Ellis was one of the first persons in the Hidden Valley Pool when it opened in August, 1934. Bernie Deigham and Jack Dennett are on hand throughout the classes as life-guards. Mr. Davis announced that the children were progressing well with their swimming and that classes in life-saving would be conducted for advanced swimmers. Tests in life-saving will be given at the end of the summer. Swimmers interested in taking this course should be on hand next Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at Hidden Valley Pool. TEEN'S DANCE SUCCESSFUL The first dance of the Teen's Canteen was a successful event at Fairfield School on Saturday night. Prize winners were Billie Fairey, Carliste Lane, Beverly Sawell, Allan Manning, Lynn Weber and Paul Rennick. Don Grierson who is the Community Council's teen canteen chairman, and Mrs. Grierson were host and hostess for the dance and will continue to act in this capacity throughout the season. Next Saturday the canteen will hold a Hallowe'en dance when a draw will be made for a special prize. FATHER-SON NIGHT Aldershot lads and their dads are looking forward to the father and son night being held at Fairfield School on Friday evening by the Men's Community Club. The entertainment promised includes a magician, movies and an exhibition of judo by two men and two 10 year old boys from the Y.M.C.A. Hot dogs, sandwiches and pop will be served after the program, which will begin at 7.30 o'clock. There will be a silver collection to defray expences.
