Area News MOTELS AGAIN BEFORE E. [East] FLAMBORO COUNCIL Hamilton Spectator - Aldershot, April 5,1951 The East Flamboro Township Council met with Reeve W. A. Bates presiding and all councillors present. The motel question, which has aroused so much interest and debate in the Aldershot area lately, arose again. Three prospective motel builders appeared to petition the council for building permits. C. S. Lees, represented L. C. Drew, who was asking for a permit to construct a 12-unit motel on lot four, broken front, S. H. Hill read a petition signed by 83 Aldershot residents protesting Mr. Drew's proposed motel, and drawing council's attention to the Ontario Municipal Act, section 390, which deals with the use of land in certain areas within a municipality. Mr. Lees pointed out that several of the people who had signed the petition had since assured him they did not realize they were signing a petition against Mr. Drew, who has been a resident of Aldershot for many years. Mr. Lees presented a counter petition, signed by the owners of property immediately adjoining Mr. Drew's stating they had no objection to the motel. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Robinson also petitioned the council for a building permit to construct a dwelling and motel on part of lot six, Concession One. Kenneth Martin, representing Lillian Iwan, in a request for a building permit to construct a motel on lot eight in Reiss Court survey, stated, "the petition would seem to be from a reactionary group who object to any changes or progress being made". Col. D. Crowe, from the Department of Publicity and Travel, Toronto, addressed the council and gave the department's opinion on the motel question. He stated the motel industry as a whole was improving in standards of building, equipment and ethics. He stated that motels were here to stay, and the motel industry, still in its infancy in Canada, was growing rapidly. Allan P. Deacon, consultant of the Planning Board, Toronto, suggested that the council take no action on motels until they obtain the zoning by-laws and maps which the planning board is preparing for the area in question. Ken Soble asked the council for permits to build on three lots in the CHML survey on the National Road. This was granted after the council heard the opinion of S. Woods, engineer and surveyor, that the porosity of the soil, which he had tested, was excellent and so suited to septic systems. Mr. Soble offered to post a bond to cover road construction in Garden Heights Survey, so that the water could be put in first and the roads later.
