We asked our YMCA camp counsellors to give us the top five things that kids learn at camp. Appreciation for Nature As our world becomes more focused on technology, summer camp offers a place for kids to disconnect from modern life and get back to nature. Away from the noise and bustle of the city, kids learn to connect with nature through exploring hikes, canoeing and swims in a lake. Increased Confidence A summer camp experience encourages kids to be independent, to make decisions and work through challenges on their own. Kids at summer camp gain a greater sense of their own self-worth and learn to treat themselves and others with respect. Leadership Camp encourages kids to build problem solving and leadership skills by working with others. Campers learn the give-and-take necessary to work toward the common good. How to Play Unstructured play and the chance to try new activities all bring kids back to active play. At summer camp, kids can "just be kids", spending all day, every day in an open and fresh atmosphere that boosts imagination and creative expression. Enthusiasm for New Experiences At summer camp, kids and counsellors work together, forging a connection and mutual understanding that creates a strong feeling of community. Summer camp also gives your child the opportunity to get excited about making new friends and learn new things. This summer, the YMCA of Oakville is excited to offer three new speciality camps including horseback riding camp, Bricks 4 Kidz camp for Lego builders and RockPro camp for future rock stars.
