Of 95 car seats inspected, 74 were improperly installed. Most booster seats, which are for older children, passed muster. Although the check is dubbed a clinic and is aimed at educating the public, police laid charges in a few circumstances where children were not in a car seat at all. Studies have shown using a child safety seat properly reduces the chance of a child being killed Failure rate high at car seat spot check or injured in a collision by 75 per cent. This year's results are considerably poorer than last year's, which yielded a 70 per cent failure rate.
