Mental health events to increase awareness by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Wednesday, May 8, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com It's time to focus on mental health. As Oakville joins in marking Mental Health Week (May 6-12), with a focus on youth mental health, there's no lack of events and activities aimed to increase awareness. An ongoing art exhibit at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre is supporting local mental health programs at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). The exhibit, Mindful Art, runs until June 6. It features the photography and pottery of artist Susan Brown. The art can be seen in the corridor galleries of the centre, available during the centre's normal operating hours. Tomorrow (Thursday), the artist is holding a day-long event with art, music, conversation and information on mental health resources from noon- 8 p.m. Live music will be provided by pianist Joan Andrews and singer/songwriters Philomene Hoffman and Darla McNevin. Half the proceeds from the art sales will be donated to the hospital's Navigator Program, which provides early intervention to those under age 18 who are struggling with mental health illnesses. The cultural centre is located at 2302 Bridge Rd. For more information, visit www. mindfulart.ca. A Teen Mental Health Q&A was held Tuesday at the OE Conference Centre.
