Youth ambassador McFarland speaks on life with diabetes continued from p.13 of reach. They're not realistic. They try to set limitations on you and tell you your dreams aren't realistic." He was in Grade 6 when he began hearing such comments and he decided to prove people wrong. The professional power lifter said he began lifting weights. Lapadat went on to win Canadian power-lifting titles and international medals, while setting Guinness World Records for squats and deadlifts. Last November, the Oakville resident won the gold medal at the world championships in power lifting in Massachusetts. Lapadat also partnered with JDRF doing fundraising events for the organization. "I came back and went on tour doing all of the things people said I couldn't do," he told the students. "When I was a kid, people said flipping over cars is impossible for a man to do, pulling airplanes and squatting bleachers full of people is impossible for a man to do, so I went on tour all over Canada doing these things, flipping over cars, pulling airplanes and squatting bleachers full of people." Lapadat also told the students that if a boy can grow up and become a superhero then any dream can be achievable. The students also heard from JDRF representatives and their peer, McFarland -- a 12-year-old who is a youth ambassador for the organization. As such, McFarland gives talks about living with diabetes. "People are curious about my insulin pump, the size of needles I get, how it affects me and what I hate most about Type 1 Diabetes. By the way, it's definitely the needles," she said. "Adults, in particular, find it hard to understand how children deal with this disease." McFarland told the students researchers don't know how people get Type 1 Diabetes, but they're working on finding out.
