Trustees at Tuesday night's board meeting supported developing a multi-pronged plan, a call made by Oakville trustee Paul Marai. Marai said there's a need for more trustees in intensive growth areas, such as Milton, but fell short of accepting a reduction in representation in its other communities. In effect, Marai's call reaffirms the status quo of trustee distribution for the 2014 municipal election -- nine in all, with four for Oakville, three for Burlington and one each for Halton Hills and Milton, unless the provincial government allows an additional trustee. The motion also calls for elections within the Halton Catholic board to remain in the current format -- trustees are elected at large in Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills but by ward in Burlington. Despite all that, Marai called for the board to create a multi-year lobby plan to seek change -- with a view to accommodate significant growth in areas like Milton. Three weeks ago, Education Director Michael Pautler delivered a staff report to trustees that stated the board wasn't entitled to a 10th trustee for the 2014 municipal elections. That being the case, board administrators had suggested the most equitable solution, for now, was to take away one of the four trustee positions for Oakville and give a second trustee position to Milton in 2014. Both towns are acknowledged as undergoing rapid housing development, with Milton's among the most intense in Canada. see Milton on p.14 www.oakville.ca Monday, June 10, 2013 at 7 p.m. Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Road, Council Chamber North Oakville (lands between Dundas Street and Highway 407) Town Initiated 42.03.88, Ward No. 4, 5 & 6 You are invited to attend and provide input at this meeting hosted by Planning and Development Council.
