The bullying awareness and prevention campaign gala was held at Cineplex theatre in Oakville recently. Oakville's James W. Hill Public School scored first place among elementary schools. Burlington's Robert Bateman High School came in first in the secondary category. It was followed by Oakville's White Oaks and Oakville Trafalgar high schools. The campaign is a partnership between the local police force along with Halton Region, Halton public and Catholic school boards and independent schools. It was designed to recognize the long-term effects bullying can have on youths, their families and friends. This year's focus was how people can join together to support their peers. Students from Grades 6 to 12 were challenged to develop a message that addresses bullying and which can become part of a friendly competition using various media such as technical studies and the general arts. The school boards selected their final submissions that were judged by a panel of police and school board officials and youths. "These impressive submissions demonstrated a commitment to the focus of this year's campaign, and that is to stand up against bullying," said Margaret Cericola, System Principal for Safe and Inclusive Schools for the Halton District School Board.
