Historic day for school an unforgettable experience continued from p.20 climate of anticipation and excitement for all. The event started off with all classes competing in trivia games. Later on, our school was very fortunate to have Jennifer Botherill, a retired player for the Canadian National Women's Hockey Team, share her story to inspire students. The day was also captured on film with a school picture, which was taken on the football field. The official ceremony began at 1:30 p.m. Trustees, staff, and students from the Halton District School Board came to the event. Special guests included Mayor Rob Burton, Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, Halton MPP Ted Chudleigh, and the president of the Juno Beach Centre association, Don Cooper. It was also an honour to have Mr. Webb's family and friends, as well as a number of veterans come in to support the school's opening. The event was led by two student masters of ceremony. There were many skilful performances from our school band and the Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada Pipes & Drums. Our vice-principal introduced dignitaries and warmly welcomed attending guests and students while our principal made a speech regarding his pleasure to be the first principal of Garth Webb Secondary School. A video recording of the late Garth Webb, a Second World War veteran who founded the Juno Beach Centre in Normandy, France, was played to all students, staff, and visitors. In this video he expressed his gratitude and honour to have a school named after him, and his hopes and wishes for the success of all students and staff. After the conclusion of the ceremony, there was a flyby at 3 p.m. of vintage airplanes, which included a de HavillandCanada Chipmunk and a Harvard MK IV . As both Royal Canadian Air Force planes flew over the school, tion to conclude the day. The official opening was a memorable experience for all staff, students, and guests. It was a historic day for the school, which celebrated the progress and success of the school year. Overall, Garth Webb Secondary School's official opening day was unforgettable and will be remembered by all students and staff for years to come.
