Math pilot grows, a little Police investigate home invasion by Dominik Kurek Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Friday, May 17, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Following a successful trial at Georgetown's Gardiner Public School, the Halton District School Board will expand its Accelerated Math pilot to all Halton public schools -- but only to gifted students. As the pilot expands, it will only be available to students in self-contained gifted classes, at least for the next year. The program allows Grade 8 students to work beyond their grade level in mathematics. Four students in a self-contained gifted class participated in the pilot at Gardiner last year. They completed the Grade 8 math curriculum in semester one and then did a Grade 9 online course in semester two. This year, the students entered a Grade 10 math class in semester one of their Grade 9 year. All successfully completed the curriculum. At Wednesday's board meeting, Jeff Blackwell, associate director suggested the expansion of the pilot should remain in gifted classes. That would allow the board to maintain its assessment strategies for determining the success of the program. The program also requires teacher readiness and ability to support students in a compacted curriculum and a class setting that allows for students to be pulled out of regular class time to work on the program. Burlington trustee Dianna Bower favoured expanding the program beyond gifted students, saying the original intent of the motion by trustees in June 2011 was to provide the accelerated program to all students. Education director David Euale said there are students in regular classes who could manage accelerated math, but there are potential obstacles, such as reaction from teachers unions. Halton Hills trustee Alice Strachan said she also favours offering accelerated math to all students, but said the pilot sample of four students and one teacher is not sufficiently large enough to offer enough evidence to move forward. Oakville trustee Ann Harvey-Hope said the board needs to determine if the pilot is successful on a larger scale. Trustees voted to keep the expanded pilot in self-contained classes while staff will do a feasibility study at the end of another year to determine if accelerated math should be available to all students. That report is expected back before the board in June 2014. In the meantime, the program will be available to Grade 8 students in self-contained gifted classes who are assessed by school and board staff with input from their parents as having the appropriate ability, interest, learning styles and learning skills for acceleration in math. The online Grade 9 curriculum is offered through the Avon-Maitland Distance Education Centre, at a cost of $720 per student, paid for by the Halton board. Halton police are investigating a home invasion on Nelson Street Tuesday afternoon. Around 5 p.m., police say two men forced their way into a home, tied up the occupant and held that person at gunpoint before fleeing with stolen goods. The victim immediately called police. The resident suffered minor physical injuries, but did not require medical treatment. Police did not disclose details of what was reported stolen, but did say the residence was specifically targeted and noted the incident was not drug-related. The first suspect is described as a white male, 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10 ,with an average build and possibly in his early 30s. The second suspect is described as a white male, 6-foot and in his early 30s. He wore dark pants and a jacket with a hoodie underneath and covered his face with a darkcoloured balaclava. The culprits may have driven a mid-size, dark-coloured vehicle. Police are continuing their investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905878-5511, ext. 2215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-TIPS (8477), through the web at www. haltoncrimestoppers.com or by texting `Tip201' with your message to 274637 (crimes).
