Photo by GRAHAM PAINE Controversial Town Hall expansion Council endorses revised design By MELANIE HENNESSEV The Champion A schemnatic design for the much-dis- cussed and often controversial Town Hall expansion was given the thumbs up by Milton council Monday night despite two residents' requests flot to do 50. Plans for the 50,0() square-foo)t addition which have been revised in response to the pub- lic 's complaints that it looked too modem -were presented for council's endorsement by architects The Ventin Group. While councillors voiced their support for the approximate $19-million project, local resident Agostino Galioto called on themn to put the Town Hall expansion on thse ballot in Ibis fall's munici- pal election so that residents can vote on it. He dubbed the addition "a big mistake" and questionied how council could make an informed decîsion on the matter until a list of itemized costs is on the table. Milton citizen Bob Beyette also appealed 10 councîl to put the project on hold until thse town's population, in bis view, benter warrants thse expan- sion and can more easily absorb its associated costs. "Until we have the growth level and the tax base that actually warrants this expanston, might we not identefy and harness aIl other available space options'?" he asked. "l'm askeog counicîl to consider thîs slow-down approach belore sve give taxe much 'green light' 10 this very important but sttll fuîuristic expansion initiative.- 'Mse Towsn held four public feedback sessions before bringing thse design to council -meetings that were well atîended and saw residents voice their strong and ofteo crîtical thougs on the proj- ect.
