Health department staff will randomly select and visît 300 Halton residents who draw their water from private wells and request that they participate in the survey Those who take part will be asked to answer a few brief questions and provide a sample of their well water for nitrate and bacteria level testing. In addition to collecting water samples, health depart- ment staff will assess the location and construction of the private well and provide specific recommendIations for Conductîng the survey provides the Region with an opportunîty to share information wmîh residents about main- taîning their pnivate wells and the importance of having their well water tested regularly The survey wîll be conducted in two phases - spring and summer - to allow compansons. 'Previnus surveys conducted in the years 1993 and 2000 found that water [rom a considerable number of wells in Halton did not meet the standards for drinking water safety," said Dr. Bob Nosal, Halions medical offîcer of health. "uefforts remain focused on encouraging regular test- ing andrproper well construction and maintenance." Resuits of the 2006 survey will also be compared against those [rom previous surveys to determine if there've been any changes in welI water quality Through the health department, residents can have sam- pies of their weIl water tested for bacteria at no0 cost. Samples can be dropped off at depots Iocated throughout Halton.
