Manager of Purchasing Services www.halton.calshop The Region is launching its Smart Commute Halton program to help reduce local traffic congestion and improve air quality. The new venture is for employees of the H-lton Regional Centre and the Woodlands Operation Centre and is designed to reduce single occupant vehicle trips to, and from work. "The goal of Smart Commute Haltnn is tn e'ncourage employees of Halton Region to try alternate modes of transportation to work," said CAO Brent Marshall. "Halton Region is implementing improved transportation choices such as a carpool ride match program, pref- erential carpool parking and an emer- gency ride home program." But local residents can benefit from the Smart Commute initiative as well by visitmng wwwsmartcommute.ca and checking out the Carpool Zone, a ride matching service. Regional Chairman Joyce Savoline said while Smart Commute Halton is a demonstration program, she noted it will be used as an example for initia- tives that can he implemented at other regional facilities, local municipalities and employers within Halton. "t encourage aIl Halton businesses and residents to join Smart Commute Halton and help reduce traffic conges- tion, smog and greenhouse gas emis- sions,' she said. Smart Commute Halton comnes as part of the transportation demand reduction program called the Smart Commute Initiative, which forms a parsnership with the cities of Hamilton, Mississauga and Toronto, the regions of Durham, Peel and York and Transport Canada. To support sustainable transporta- tion solutions, the Region is undertak- ing the development of a Transportation Management Association (TMA) across Halton. TMAs, which offer services like car- pool ride masching and an emergency ride home program, are being devel- oped and implemented across the GTA.
