The communiîy services committee endorsed a resolution lasi week that calîs for ail existing crossovers - which are sections on local husy roads where pedestrians can activate flashing lighîs when crossing the sîreet - to he removed and no further ones be installed. The motions says instead, only intersection pedesîrian signais and mid-block pedesîrian signais, which look and work like traffic signais, sbould he installed on major roadways if warrants are fulfilled. A staff report explains the munici- paliîy has receîved complaînîs from both pedestrians and motorists ahout the safeîy of the crossovers. "These calls relate to motorisîs not sîopping when the yellow lights were flashing on the pedestrian crossovers and also pedestrians not pushîng the buttons located in the middle of the road at the pedestnian refuge îslands to actîvate the lights," the report says. Staff conducîed studies ai the five crossox er locations to determine il they're warranîed, looking ai both tral- lic volume and numbher oh pedc'trians crossing the road. The results show the only spot that meets the warrant is on Ontario Street ai Ridge Drive. The cormmittee went on to support removiflg the pedestrian crossover ai that location and replacîng it with a mid-hlock pedestrian signal. Mayor Gord Krantz voîced support for removing the crossovers, noting every time traffic lias to stop it creates grîdlock and pollution. "Id suggesi somne decisions to put these in were political decisions," he said, cautionîng counicillors to be care- fui about "falling mbt that trap" again. "Several (of the crossovers) around town probably should neyer have gone in. Currently there are iwo pedestian crossovers on Ontanio Street, one on Martin Street and anoîher on Chîlds Drive. There was one on Bronme Street, hut ît was taken down to make way for a home that was moved. Staff estîmates il will cost $ 150,000 10 remrove the crossovers and instaîl the pedestrian signal. The motion will be on council's agenda this Monday If ils approved, the locations where the crossovers are heing taken down will continue to be monitored hy staff 10 see if other traffic control devîces are needed.
