A6 - The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, February 20, 2007 Charges. prompt crucial message Although impaired dniv- ing charges againsl a young Milton man in connection with a crash that tragically killed an Orangeville man are 50 far only charges flnot convictions - ils neyer the wrong turne to push for tougher dninking and dniv- ing laws. Mothers Against Drunk Drîving (MADD) Canada recently re-launched ils pub- lic awareness carnpaign 10 bring the legal limits for drinking and driving to Canadians'attention. MADD Canada's'Enough is Enough' campaign was created 10 educate and move the coun- try's law makers to draft effective impaired driving laws with more appropriate legal lirnits. Central to the' campaign is MADD Canadas support for the recently întroduced Bill C-376, which catis tor a new 0.05 per cent BAC Criminal Code offence for impaired driving. MADD Canada reports that in practical terms, the current federal legal limit of 0.08 per cent BAC means a 200-pound man on an empty stomach can drink six-pins standard drinks in îwo hours and likely won'î be chargcd with a Criminal Code offence for impaired driving. Our lawmakers must seri- ously look ai a new sanction like Bill C-376 because the status quo 15 unacceptable. Police owed apology for hoax DEAR EDITOR: VVhen 1 first read tht recent article in Tht Champion that there was an abduction allempt of îwo lle girls, it angered me 10 know that there is a sick person like that in my communily 1 was very impressed with tht details tht girls gave tht police, including tht dent in tht front fender of tht car. Good tyts girls. A few days later 1 began 10 read tht newspaper and saw tht headlîne 'Suspicious manî story made up'. After 1 fin- ished reading tht article the first thing that wenî îhrough my mind was tht slory 'Tht boy who critd wolf'. t'm preîty sure tverybody knows how tht story gots, but if those îwo girls don't, they should ask their moins or dads to take îbemn down to tht pub- lic library and read il. They mighî learn someîhing from it. Don't worry, 1 won't spoil the endîng. Like Det. Sgt. Peter Hodgson said in the fo)llow--op article, 'Theres obviously relief that there isn'l a predator ont there. Thaîs our first response. And theres satisfac- tion (the case) was concluded before a loi of panic spread.' l'mn fot a parent myself, but l'm pretîy sure there was a lot of concern out there - by the parents in tht area of tht ,abduction allempt', by tht parents in tht communiîy and by many other adults who care whaî happens in their com- munity 1 myself was broughî up 10 admit 10 my mistakes and to apologize for my errors. Have those two girls made an apolo- gy 10 it Milton police depart- ment for wasîing their lime on a hoax? 1 think thty're very lucky that there were no charges laid, because if it was an aduit who wasîed police lime on a hoax, l'm sure there would he charges brought forth. Wiîh that in mind, 1 don't îhink it would hurt those îwo girls t0 give up four hours of their lime and help dlean up the Mill Pond on a Saturday afîernoon in the summer. The Town wouldn't need 10 worry about supplying garbage bags or picking up tht bags. 1 would supply the girls with bags and gloves and even psy for the deposil fee ai the dump. So what do you say, girls? WALLY REDICKER CAMPBELLVILLE Turner's decision to join Liberals disgusting DEAR EDITOR: Like most volers, 1 vote for a parly and its platfonn ai election time. 1 rarely care who tht local MP or incumbent might be, just that îhey will follow tht values, ethics and promises îhaî tht parîy as a whole inîends te, deliver. Lîke many in Halton who voîed for Garth Turntr, 1 voted for tht Conservatives, not for Turner. Should 1 have wanîed tht Liberals 10 win, 1 would have vottd for Gary Carr. tMy point is, few people vole for tht ptrson - îbey vote for tht paity This is wby lin dis- gusted in Turners choice to join tht Liberals, particularly afier tht many rants and tirades he exhibîîed about other politicians who have dont tht saine îhing. Following Tuniers own logic. if Halton lis goîng red, tht MP position belongs 10 Carr. There's no room in any party for Turners ego, let alone bis arrogant, self-strving and loud mouîhed behavîour. JONATHAN MITROVICH FREEMAN TRAIL Criticism flot too surprising DEAR EDITOR: Ils certainly no surprise 10, me that a number of people who wanîed Stephen Harper tobe prime minister are unbap- py that 1 recenîly joined tht federal Liberal caucus. A year ago 1 hoptd, as well, tIsat Mr Harper would be the leader wt needed. But having sat in bis caucus, being prevented from openly representing tht people of Halton, seeing the broken promise on incomne trusts, a needless debate on the rights of gay people and a year of total inaction on tht environ- ment have left me extremely disap- poinîed. Afler sitting as an independent MP for four monîha, and consulting with everyone 1 could think of, my conclu- sion was clear: I'd be more effective for votera by joining a îeam. Stephane Dion welcomed me as a former Progressive Conservative, and a guy who puis voters first and party sec- ond. I've been in polities long enough 10 know tht difference between controver- sy and conviction, When I took this job, il was 10 be an MP who serves con- stituents rather than political masters, especially ones whose primary goal is sei.zing and keeping power. So il really dotan't matter how loudly some jilted volers squawk, l11l do whaî I think is right and live with the consequenees.
