Town negotiating for Mary St. liand The Town bas made a conditional offer to purchase a Mary Street property to increase the parking available dlown- town. The land, located at 222-224 Mary St., will be used to expand an existing municipal parking lot - providing 32 new parking spaces - and is expected to be ready for pub- lic use next year. "As our community continues to grow and the business and retail opportunities expand in the downtown area, addi- tionai parking wiil certainly be welcome for the operators and their customners," said Mayor Gord Krantz. "The Town continues to make every effort to support the downtown through parking, beautification and other infrastructure projects." The price of the property can't be disclosed at the presenit time because of the conditional nature of the offer, said a Town spokesperson. The funds for the purchase come fromt the cash-mn-lieu of parking reserve. Commercial zoning bylaws require busi- nesses to maintain a certain number of parking spaces according to the floor area of the commercial property. Businesses uhat are unable to provide these spaces are required to psy a certain amount per space, with those funds used to facilitate public parking. "il commend the Town for taking a proactive approach to enhancing our downtown," said Glenn English, chair of the Downtown Business Improvement Area. "This conveniently located parking will be a great benefit to the downtown busi- ness community.'
