The Canadian Champion, Friday, September 7, 2007 - A21 gDflUTýMC SPORTS EDITOR: STEVE LeBLANC e-mail sieblanc@haltonsearch.com -; Anderson's 4s team bowls over national field By Steve LeBlanc CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF D avid Andersons national prosperity continues. Serving as vice, the 43-year-old Mlton lawn bowler helped is Steve McKerihen- skipped Etobicoke 4s team to top honours at the receni Canadian champîonships in Montreal. This marked his fourth gold and seventh miedal at the natonal level. It also served as a measure of sindication for a ess-than-impressive performance in Julys Atlantic Games in Avr, Scotland. "That seems to be the way it goes. Whenever we dont do that well in interna- tional competition I corne back and win at nationals." said the sea- soned lawn bowler. Upgrading last year's bronze, Anderson and company were thor-- oughly dominating on the way t0o their latest national ritde - Win- ning all but one of their round- robin games, wth most of those victories secured in decisive fasb- io We played really well and David A picked each other up at tbe right times to avoid any big ends goîng against us. Other than the B.C. loss (14-11), the closest game we had was a 17-13 win against the other Ontario entry.' That provincial rival awaited them in the Anderson championsbip, where McKerîhen's foursome - whtch included sec- ond John Devonshire, a longtime patiner of Anderson who moved to town just last month - jumped out to a qutck lead and went on to an 18-7 rout. Recalled Anderson, ,\e dtdn't even play the last two ends,."Ne were actually the Ontario B team, havng taking silver at provincials. which usually works out better for us at the nationals." The eventual champs had a shot at an unbeaten national campaîgn. but a jammed howl by McKerihen cost them a four-point end midway through their defeat to B.C. Otherwise, Ontarios B entry managed to stdestep any real problems in Montreal, thanks in large part to some big clutch play by McKerhen and about as much cohesion as they've ever enjoyed. "If one of us had a bad stretch, someone else would tise to the occasion and make up the diflerence, so, falling tnto, a hole was neyer really an issue," explained Anderson. "To play that well ail week at this level was great." Winning Canadians was a major tune-up to next week's national selection camp in Burlington, where Anderson will look to soltdify his third trip to the world champi- onships - slated for next year in New Zealand. "'m playîng well night now, but we'll just have to wait and see what happens."
