UNDERSTANDING THE ISSUES & CHALLENGES AT HAND The need for a more sustainable approach is driven by major problems such as peak fossil fuel use, climate change, inability to produce food supply, marine degradation, global dimming and terrestrial attack. Without question, the common thread running through these issues lies in how we use energy. The race to extract yesterday's fossil fuels creates economic and territorial strife. It justifies wars and challenges economies. The supply of yesterday's energy becomes harder to produce, and is now made worse by a global population which exceeds 7.1 billion people. We are all rapidly reaching the point where we demand an ever increasingly amount of yesterday's energy from yesterday's sources at alarming new costs. Similarly, we can no longer rely on centuries old weather patterns to grow the basic food for global survival. Why? Because the climate is changing ­ on land and in the air, and in oceans and water bodies everywhere. Ocean acidity and increased temperatures dramatically affect aquatic life. It all can be traced back to one common factor ­ indulgent use of yesterday's energy, kept stored in fossil fuels we consume today.
