New Garth Webb school marks the end of its beginning by Dominik Kurek Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Friday, May 10, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com There was piping, military personnel and a flypast by two Canadian bombers from the Second World War. It all celebrated the first year of Garth Webb Secondary School, which opened last September. The school was named after the late Garth Webb, a Burlington resident and veteran of the Second World War, most famously known for spearheading the creation of the Juno Beach Centre in Normandy, France. Principal Larry O'Malley told an assembly of parents, students, staff and guests the year has been a significant one for the school, filled with firsts on a near-weekly basis, from sports, clubs and councils to fundraisers. "Each of these brings back special memories for us, but each also symbolizes the important characteristics of our students and our school community," he said. O'Malley quoted British Prime Minster Winston Churchill, who spoke after a victory, saying: "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." "Churchill's words were meant to inspire the people of the British Empire, but for us these words will serve as a reminder that this is the end of the beginning of our first year of success here at Garth Webb Secondary School." The celebration included the piping in of dig- nitaries by the Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada Pipes & Drums. William Granger performed The Last Post and the Garth Webb Junior Band performed the Celebration Dance. Halton District School Board director of education David Euale thanked those who constructed the school. "However, those individuals constructed the building, but they did not build the school. The job of building the school is the job of students, staff and parents. They will create a climate to find its purpose and build its reputation." The assembly also watched a short video clip of Webb, who had been able to visit the school before he died. see School on p.18 A war plane does a flypast as staff and students take photos at Garth Webb Secondary School. photos by Nikki Wesley Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog) UP TO LIMITED TIME OFFER! *With Purchase of Prescription Lenses 50 OFF ALL FRAMES % * 125 Cross Avenue, Oakville (Across from Home Depot) www.spaceoptical.ca 905-842-2821 Don't Just Live Life Hear Life!
