Recession slows industrial/commercial growth: report By Melanie Hennessey CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF The recession bas slowed the once break- neck speed of new industrial and commercial development in Milton, with last years numbers reflecting a significant drop in building activity. According to a report that went before town councîl Monday night, 2009 saw 508,619 square feet of industnial/commercial/institutional (ICI) development in Milton - down [rom three con- secutive years of 1.9 million square feet of ICI growth. The report [rom the Milton Economic Development Advisory Committee (MEDAC) attributed the slow down to the recession, which bas affected ICI development across the region. "The economic impact of the recession was significant, specifically in the industrial market, however Milton faired much bctter than other comnionities wherc new developments were non-existent," the report stated. A ban o n smoking within nine metres, or about 30 feet, of hockey arenas, pools, libi-aries and other municipal facilities will kick in February 15. The prohibition applies to ail buildings owned or leased by Halton Region or the lower-tier munictpalities of Milton, Oakville, Burlington and Halton Hilîs. Along witb recreation facili- tics, the list also includes munic- ipal offices, community centres, museums, art galleries, police stations, [ire halls, ambulance stations and public washrooms. It will impact about 150 munici- pal facilities, according to Regtonal staff. Councils at the Region and the local municipalities endorsed the ban last year, with Halton responsible for enforce- mecnt.
