S: OPINION Protect vourseif z o '- As wc bead into the * sommer, tboughts of gar- Sdening, outdoor recreation and other fun-in-the-sun activities become forefront in our mincis. The Canada Safety Council recently launched 3ils National Summer Safety JWeek awareness campaign te remind us of the dan- gers associated with ultra- Iviolet (UV) rays. Statistics provideci by the council indicate that neariy one in five Canadians is likely te develep skin cancer seme- timte duning their lives. Melanoma is the type most likely te be fatal. Its also, one of the most com- mon cancers among young people in Canada aged 15 to 29. There are some simple tips you can follow te pro- tect you and your family, including: Apply sunscreen gen- erously before ahl outdoor physical activities. Remember te apply at least 20 minutes before Sun expesure. Re-apply often, as perspiration will reduce the effectiveness; 0 Schedule outdoor physical activities when UV rays are at their weak- est, before il a.m. and after 4 p.m; * Always keep chilciren under the age cf one eut of the sun; a Cover chilcirens heads, necks and ears with a broaci-brimmeci hat when outdoors. As a lifeiong Miltonian wbo's leamnec te drive in tbe past few years, 1 can truthfully say thar where some people decide to park in residentiai areas creates a driving hazard. For example, torning left from Syer Drive ente Laurier Avenue, one near- ly bas te be entireiy past the stop sign in order te see around the cars parked not oniy on the street, but aise on the boule- yard. This blocks the view of pos- sibie onceming traffic from either the stop ligbts at Laurier andi Thompson Roaci or the three-way stop at Laurier. andi Coxe Boulevard. Tbis ix just cne of many exampies in this neigbbour- booci alonte. Hayward Crescent, across from Laurier Park, is aise notoniously bad for parked cars on the street. Tbis seriousiy impedes traffic, since car own- ers like te park near the bencis in the street, or right at the cor- ner across from Laurier Park, opposite the stop sign, wben al the parking spaces are taken up and theres ne more roem te park aiong Laurier duning soc- cer games. In my opinion, parking laws are aimost net strict enough. Surroonding municipalities such as Oakville andi Burlington have similar parking bylaws and Mississauga has even stnicter laws when compareci te or own. i have seen owners cf multi- ple cars make the best cf their limiteci amount cf space for driveways or garages in some very efficient ways. Complaining about a park- ing ticket receiveci for iilegaliy parking on the road when own- ing two cars but only baving accommodations for one is pointiess. Its nobody's fauît but yoor own. You shoolci bave either bougbt smaiier veblicles or a house with parking accommo- dations that fit your needs. MILTON political move DEAR EDITOR: l'd like te comment on town counciilors decision te, freeze their salaries this year and not approve the 2 per cent increase that was pro- poseci. i believe this freeze ils nothing more than a symbolic and political gesture lnspired more by the upcom- ing election than this councils con- cern for taxpayer dollars. Let us not forget that this is the same council that voted itself a 23 per cent salary increase six months after being elected. in fact, over the iast three years these councillors have incresseci their own salaries from the $20,572 it was when they were elected te, the current amount of $26,495.00 - an increase of 28 per cent. Dunng that saine periode tdus council bas increased property taxes by 17 per cent. it seemas like these councillors were filling their own poekets whiie emptying the pockets cf ordinary Miltonians.
