Her daughters are intending to return to live in Canada, something their mother had hoped for -- and worked tirelessly towards -- for the past five years. Lean, aged 14, and Saniel, 11, wrapped up their month-long visit to Canada on May 19, but now hope to return in the fall. The youths stayed with their mother's former employers and close friends in Oakville, Jodie and Eli Gilbert, where they were able to be close to their mother in hospital. They intend to return in September to live here permanently. "It's bittersweet," said Jodie. "This is obviously what Maricon wanted. Here, her dream has come true so I'm happy Maricon Gerente for that and I'm happy the girls have this opportunity. But then a part of me is also sad, because it's not going to be the real dream that she wished for." Gerente left her native Philippines in pursuit of a better life for herself and her daughters. She found work in Paris, France, working for a family for about five years and then was hired by the Gilberts as a live-in nanny for their children. Gerente maintained constant contact with her daughters by telephone and Internet and visited yearly. She also went to school on weekends and became educated as a personal support worker. She moved out of the Gilbert home, but remained good friends with the family, when she became a personal support worker. Last October, she was diagnosed with a brain tumour and has been in hospital ever since with no higher cognitive function. Her daughters, chaperoned by Gerente's cousin Aileen Banzontan, flew to Oakville to see and say goodbye to their mother, thanks to the help of the Gilberts and support of the community. There was an expectation Gerente would die in hospital while the girls were in Canada see Teens on p.11 THE SUMMER HEAT ARE YOU READY?
