R O L E M O D E L Buzz appears destined for fourth-place finish The Ontario Lacrosse Association junior B season is barely half over, but it's already easy to determine where the Oakville Buzz will likely finish in the standings. Following a weekend split of an eastern road trip, the Buzz is 8-3 with nine games to go in the campaign, making the team one of just four squads in the East Conference with a winning record. Oakville, however, trails the undefeated Halton Hills Bulldogs by six points in the South East Division. If the Buzz does not overtake Halton Hills in the final nine games, fourth in the conference standings is the highest Oakville can finish. The top three seeds in the conference go to division winners, which will almost certainly include the Far East's Akwesasne Indians (8-2) and Mid East's Clarington Green Gaels (11-1). Oakville defeated the Kahnawake Hunters 13-12 Saturday night in western Quebec and dropped a 17-10 decision to Akwesasne Sunday afternoon near Cornwall. Eddie Renaud paced the Buzz versus Akwesasne, striking for four goals and three assists. Sam Neeb (four goals), Troy O'Donnell (two goals, three assists) and Mitch Wales (four assists) also enjoyed productive evenings. Greg Campbell added a pair of 27 | Wednesday, June 5, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Lacrosse goals and Jake Nyhuus chipped in with a single in support of winning netminder Brent Noseworthy. The Indians blitzed Oakville 9-2 in the first period of Sunday's contest and their lead was unthreatened the rest of the way. Foster Cuomo had two goals and an assist, O'Donnell scored and had three helpers, Justin Martin potted a pair of goals and Pat Shea had a goal and two assists. Other markers were scored by Ryan Sullivan, Mitchell Bolduc, Campbell and Wales. Noseworthy took the loss. The Buzz will be home to the Orillia Kings Friday at Toronto Rock Athletic Centre, beginning at 8 p.m. Sr. A Rock edged by Kitchener-Waterloo The Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks scored twice in the final 3:26 of regulation time to edge the Oakville Rock 7-6 in Ontario Lacrosse Association senior A play Monday at Toronto Rock Athletic Centre. Kyle Aquin had a hat trick in a losing cause for the Rock, which led 2-1 after one period and 5-4 after two. Nic Grasby, Kyle Davis and Mike Woods also tallied for Oakville (1-2). Tye Belanger took the loss in goal. The Rock is home again Saturday, when it hosts the Brampton Excelsiors for a 2 p.m. matinee at TRAC. Oakville Soccer Club members Hannah Schelfhaut, Alanna Delle Monache and Makena Reay got to meet one of their club's most famous alumni, 2012 Olympic women's soccer hero Diana Matheson (top left), at the Canadian national team's public training session Thursday at Toronto's BMO Field. The current OSC players represented the club in the new Umbro Canada Soccer kit and also received a brand new pair of cleats. Unfortunately, Matheson and the Canadian women weren't smiling Sunday as they dropped a 3-0 decision to the U.S. in an international friendly. | photo submitted Blakelock sending eight athletes to OFSAA despite having no track and no field continued from p.25 member of Loyola's 4x400m relay team, recently joined a track club, but Celestini said it might be a harder sell for Kristin, even though she believes the 15-year-old has plenty of potential on the track as well. "I think this is her first chance to see really how strong she is. She's a great team player, but (track) gives her control of what she's able to do, how far she's able to push herself. "She's hugely competitive and she has that drive to push herself." Despite not having a track, or a field, T.A. Blakelock will send its largest contingent to OFSAA in recent memory, an eight-member team led by a strong group of midget athletes, including regional shot put champion Cameron Madruga Madruga took the midget boys' title on his final attempt and continued a season-long trend. "Every meet we go to, he keeps doing personal bests," said Blakelock coach Pam Bovey. "He certainly has some potential and he's peaking at the right time." Bovey said both Madruga and javelin thrower Max Theune, who qualified with a fourth-place finish at regionals, have benefitted from working with David Hyde, who assists with the team. Zaria Armstrong will compete in the midget girls' 100m and most likely would have qualified in the 200m as well but sat out the race after tweaking her hamstring at regionals. Kaleigh Jeffrey will compete in both the 80m and 300m hurdles following a pair of third-place finishes. Armstrong and Jeffrey will join Megan Watt, Emma McIvor, Hazel Brown and Julia Scott on the 4x100m relay team, which turned in a second-place finish at regionals.
