Grannies will Stride to Turn the Tide Saturday Oakville-based oomama is joining four other grandmothers' groups in participating in the fourth annual Stride to Turn the Tide national fundraising walk Saturday. Oomama, along with Halton Bronte Grandmothers, Blooms for Africa, Burlington Ubuntu Grandwomen, and North Halton Grannies, will join more than 200 grandmothers and `grandothers' at Heritage Place, 4151 Kilmer Dr., in Burlington in solidarity and support of African grandmothers. The groups join thousands of grandmothers across Canada, walking to build awareness about the HIV/AIDS pandemic while raising funds to support African grandmothers and the children in their care. The 2013 National Stride to Turn the Tide Walk co- chairs, Carole Holmes and Lorraine Green, are Oakville residents. All funds raised will go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation's Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. Stride to Turn the Tide is a Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign initiative. All proceeds go to grassroots organizations in sub-Saharan Africa that support African grandmothers and the children in their care. To learn more about these organizations and how they work with African grandmothers to turn the tide of HIV and AIDS in their communities, visit www.stephenlewisfoundation.org or www. grandmotherscampaign.org. Since 2006, some 240 groups of Canadian grandmothers have taken up the call to action. To date, the campaign has raised more than $17 million for African grandmothers and the children in their care. SLF has directed these funds to partners -- community-level organizations in 15 sub-Saharan African countries that provide grandmothers with much needed support, such as nutritious food, adequate housing and bedding, school fees and supplies for their grandchildren, as well as grief counselling, support groups and HIV awareness training. Registration costs $25 and will be open at 8:30 a.m. on the day, with a group warm-up, cadet corps march and African drumming -- a post-walk barbecue celebration will follow. To register, contact lorrainegree@bell. net, or to sponsor the walk, visit www. stridetoturnthetide.ca. Heritage Place is at 4151 Kilmer Dr., off Walkers Line, south of Upper Middle Road in Burlington. 9 | Thursday, June 6, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com socialbids.ca what's it worth to you?
