www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, June 12, 2013 | 14 Recognizing Barrett's protection of waterfront by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff Former Oakville mayor Harry Barrett's leadership in preserving the town's waterfront was officially recognized Thursday. Signage was unveiled to mark the Harry Barrett Waterfront Parks System during a ceremony in Tannery Park. A plaque, bearing Barrett's image, was erected in the park. It states that during his time as a member of Oakville's Planning Board, Barrett discovered a clause in the Planning Act that entitled the municipality to a portion of the land when it was subdivided or intensified through redevelopment. This discovery was described as a critical first step to establishing Oakville's waterfront as it provided public access to many of the highly-coveted and picturesque prop- erties along Lake Ontario that had previously been off limits to all but a few residents. During Barrett's 13-year tenure as Oakville's mayor, he continued to reclaim the waterfront, establishing the Harbours Development Authority. This group was tasked with improving the town's harbours and creating a wide range of recreational opportunities for residents. "It's with great pride that we dedicate this network of waterfront parks, open spaces and trails to Mr. Harry Barrett," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "Leadership stems from doing the right things for both today and tomorrow. Harry's foresight ensured that future generations of Oakville residents and visitors can access our beautiful public lakefront properties. Barrett said it was quite profound to be recognized by his hometown, especially at the age of 87. "I must share this with all those members of council, staff and the public who supported me on this. It wasn't a popular item at times," said Barrett. "We'd been to court, we'd been see A vote on p.15 The BestDressed Houses Are Wearing Spectacularly Designed Kitchens.
