Shining a light on elder abuse in Halton The Halton Elder Abuse Network will partner with the Halton Regional Police Service Thursday to recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). The two organizations will hold events throughout the region with several retirement homes, long-term care facilities, adult day programs and seniors' centres participating by having Elder Abuse Awareness displays, refreshments, barbecues, and special `flash mobs'. Those involved will be wearing purple, the colour used to signify WEAAD. Some students in Halton will also be participating by holding a school Spirit Day and wearing purple. Police said elder abuse is a serious and growing problem. Ontario is home to 1.5 million seniors and research indicates currently four to 10 per cent (60,000 to 150,000) of them have experienced or are experiencing abuse of some kind. The numbers may be higher as police say some seniors who are abused may not wish to report the incident because of a sense of shame or because they do not want to get the loved one who is abusing them in trouble.
