www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, June 13, 2013 | 8 I Summer is almost here and it's time to crack some spines · The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Howard Fry, by Rachel Joyce -- This is the story of an old guy walking across England to visit a friend who is dying. I know, I didn't want to read this book either. It just sounded so dull and hokey. But you know the old saying: never judge a book by its plot summary, or some such. Joyce's rst novel is captivating, beautifully written and brim- know, dear readers, that this is the moment for which you have all been breathlessly waiting: my umpteenth offering of perfect prose for the poolside, bodacious books for the beach -- a list of superb summer reads that has been known to incite bedlam in bookstores, lunacy in libraries, and rioting (or, at very least, reading) in the streets. Indeed, this bestseller is so weird, so wild, so wacky, some people -- particularly those unable, or unwilling, to suspend disbelief -- may not like it. Others will crack the spine of this quirky tale and adopt the eccentric Fang family as their own. Personally, I loved it. Granted (have I mentioned?), it is weird. · Wonder Boys, by Michael Chabon -- My unabashed love for the profoundly passionate and gifted Chabon continues to grow. As The New York Times noted in reviewing Wonder Boys way back in 1995: "Chabon can write like a magical spider, effortless spinning out elaborate webs of words that ensnare the reader with their beauty and style." Eventually made into a movie starring Michael Douglas, Wonder Boys is about a fading novelist whose life just keeps getting more and more marvelously messy. · Sutton, by J.R. Moehringer -- He dazzled with his work on Open, tennis star Andre Agassi's riveting and revealing biography, and with his own brilliant bio, The Tender Bar. Now, in 20 DODGE 2013 GR. Still, I found a copy looking forlorn in a bookstore, so I bought it, read it, and absolutely loved it. True: it may be better suited for young adults, and it does indeed spin on the axis of a gimmick, but it is thoughtful, intense, intelligent, creative, wellwritten and a pleasure to read. To boot, as one of my sons said: "Best book I've ever read... in under three hours." True: it's probably more novella than novel. · The Brothers K, by David James Duncan -- This book is sometimes dismissed by snooty sorts as "a baseball novel" (not that there's anything wrong with that). While baseball is certainly the backdrop, this is a bold, broad story about love, spirituality, America in the Vietnam era and family; speci cally, the Chance family, as told by Kincaid, the clan's fourth son. A compelling read for enthusiasts of baseball. And life. Summer's almost here. What are you waiting for?
