The public school board expects to rack up $632.5 million in expenses for the 201314 school year -- up from $620 million this year. At the same time, the board projects total revenue next year to be $644.8 million. However, the $12.3 million surplus is earmarked for expenses beyond the board's control. The funds are externally appropriated and cover employee future benefits (retirement gratuities), interest to be accrued and revenues recognized for land (educational development charges). Trustees will have the draft 2013-14 budget before them for approval at their board meeting Wednesday, June 19. The majority of the board's income results from the Province's Grants for Student Needs (GSN) --$560.5 million. The board also anticipates taking in nearly $30 million in other provincial grants (such as full day kindergarten), another $19 million in school-generated funds, $11 million in fees and revenues (such as, education de- velopment charges, tuition fees, rental income, etc.), $23.5 million in amortization of deferred capital contributions, $900,000 in investment income and federal grants worth nearly $318,000. The hike in funding comes as the result of student population growth, which went up by approximately 2,500 students.
