The Oakville Fire Department Extrication Team uses the Jaws of Life on a car donated by The Skid Control School while students and faculty from T.A. Blakelock High School look on, Monday. Firefighters were on hand to send the message of promoting safe driving over the summer. | photo by Eric Riehl Oakville Beaver Alert: Your ash trees may be at Promoting safe driving risk from the Emerald Ash Borer ® TruGreen, Canada's leading lawn and tree care company, has been contracted to treat ash trees on public lands in the Town of Oakville from June through August. continued from p.1 the patient, other extrication team members painstakingly cut into the car with the Jaws of Life, removing both driver-side doors to better access the patient. The team continued the demonstration by sawing off the car's roof while the patient and paramedic remained inside. Spectator Nolan McHugh, said it was "cool" to see how the Jaws of Life work and how safe the procedure was, but said he also learned a safety lesson. "If I was in an accident like this, I'd be scared. I'd be just a pile of nerves," admitted the Grade 12 student. "It would not be fun to be in there while they're doing this. This definitely gives a `Be safe while you drive' message or you could end up in a car like that." Extrication team captain Mark Acocella spoke to students, walking them through what the team was doing to the car. Monday's demonstration, he said, had a dual purpose. One was to educate students in a bid to prevent youths from texting and driving or drinking and driving, and possibly ending up in such a situation. The other purpose of the demonstration was for the team's benefit. "It's important for everyone's own safety. Nobody wants to get into a car accident. For us, the team, we constantly train," said Acocella, noting firefighters continue learning about vehicle changes made by manufacturers. The team meets as frequently as it can, he said. It participates in competitions and two years ago was ranked first in southern Ontario, number two in North America and placed seventh overall in the worlds. Besides competing, the team is helpful to the local fire department as its members pass on their knowledge to the department's training team. Douglas Annett, director of operations of the skid school, said the school donates old skid cars, that are no longer roadworthy, to initiatives such as this or to school auto shops to be a good community partner. "We want the safety message to get out there for these students. You've got graduation parties, you have prom coming up, you have the summer. We hate seeing people get hurt," Annett said.
