Sports Briefs Jane Wheeler and Alex Dodds were named the school's senior female and male athletes of the year, respectively. Other award winners included Korey Loi (junior male athlete of the year), Amanda Prestidge (junior female athlete of the year), Anastasiya Tarnouskaya (senior female Principal's Award), Mabel Dunn (most promising Grade 9 female athlete), Shayleen Welch (Kathy Charteris Memorial Leadership Award), Justin Wu (most promising Grade 9 male athlete), Connor Bevington (senior male Principal's Award), Reese Plantery (Dean Oldershaw Award for contributions to Peel Halton Vocational Athletic Association), Max Boateng (volunteer student coach) and Jenna Wood (Wildcat Pride Award). Wheeler and Wood were also co-presidents of the school's athletic council. Rare award handed out at Abbey Park athletic banquet Abbey Park High School student Victoria Freeman was the recipient of a rare honour at the school's recent athletic banquet. Freeman was presented with the Gary Gregson Award, which recognizes graduating athletes who excel in both athletics and academics and are also leaders within the school community. Freeman was a member of the Eagles' basketball, volleyball and soccer teams for four years and was also a leader of the school's LINK program that helps Grade 9 students transition to high school. The school did not present awards for top junior athletes. OT student to play football at Simon Fraser University Oakville Trafalgar High School student Albert Opoku has committed to play football for Simon Fraser University beginning this fall. Opoku was a three-year starter for the Red Devils senior squad and was a Halton high school all-star as both a defensive back and a punt returner. He also played in the Ontario Varsity Football League with the Halton Cowboys. Tough luck for Oakville Rock in MSL play One-goal decisions have not been kind to the Oakville Rock this season. Oakville suffered its third one-goal loss of the Major Series Lacrosse senior A campaign Thursday, falling 13-12 to the host Peterborough Lakers. Oakville held a 12-9 lead with seven minutes to go in the third period, but the Lakers rallied for four goals in less than four minutes, then held on for the win. Stephan Leblanc (four goals, one assist), Kyle Aquin (three goals, three assists) and A.J. Masson (two goals, two assists) were Oakville's top offensive contributors. Connor Daly also scored twice and Graham Bergsma contributed a single. Nic Grasby had three assists for the Rock, which dropped to 1-5. Oakville is back in action tonight (Wednesday) with a visit to the 5-1-1 Brooklin Redmen. The Rock will be home to the 2-5 Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks Saturday, a 2 p.m. matinee at Toronto Rock Athletic Centre, and will also host Brooklin Monday (8 p.m.). Burloak members paddling for spots on national teams Five Burloak Canoe Club members will be among the 84 Ontario athletes paddling this weekend for spots on the Canadian team that will compete at this year's world championship meets. Adam van Koeverden, Mark Oldershaw, Jamie Andison, Aaron Rublee and Cory Rublee will join more than 250 other competitors at the national trials, which start Friday and conclude Sunday in Welland. Spots on the senior, junior and under-23 national teams will be at stake.
