www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, June 20, 2013 | 12 HIEC hosts Mayor's Breakfast The Halton Industry Education Council (HIEC) is hosting its Spring Breakfast with the Mayors tomorrow (Friday) at the Burlington Convention Centre. Celebrating 20 years of helping students explore future careers, HIEC and its partners identified a need in the community to provide information and resources to senior elementary students. With the help of Attridge Transportation, the Halton public and Catholic school boards and Halton's Do you know how your Rotary Clubs, the resulting Grade 8 Career Awareness Program has brought more than 100,000 students to HIEC's on-site Career Centre to take part in a half-day career exploration program. With inspirational speaker Kyle MacDonald, this year's breakfast will explore the theme of Leadership Through Inspiration. MacDonald is best known for his year-long adventure where he used a red paperclip and bartered it for several items, eventually landing him a house. "Those in attendance will be inspired to start small, think big and have fun as Kyle demonstrates how to apply his red paperclip idea to everyday life," stated a press release. The breakfast will run from 7:3010 a.m. Tickets cost $40 per person or $300 for a table of eight. To learn more about the event, register or ask about sponsorship opportunities, visit www.hiec. on.ca/breakfast or call 905-6342575, ext. 28. Bikers rev up to ride for Dog Guides this weekend Southern Ontario motorcyclists will be revving their engines Saturday (June 22), all in support of the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides during the Ride for Dog Guides poker run. Starting in Oakville at the 152 Wilson St. Lions Foundation headquarters, participants will ride making stops in Burlington, Guelph, St. Jacobs and Breslau, Ontario where they will collect playing cards to compete for the best poker hand. "The Ride for Dog Guides is a fun and unique way to support the six Dog Guide programs and positively impact the lives of those living with a visual, hearing, medical or physical disability," Sandy Turney, executive director, said in a press release. The final stop of the poker run will include dinner, live music, a silent auction and the announcement of the winner of the ride. Riders are encouraged to raise funds prior to the event or pay a registration fee of $25 on the day -- all proceeds will go towards raising and training Dog Guides (a cost of $25,000) to Canadians in need at no cost to them. Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by the start of the ride at 10 a.m. For information, visit www. dogguides.com/events.html.
