The event, titled H.E.RO.S. (Halton's Extreme Race and Obstacle Scramble), will take place Saturday, Aug. 17 at Kelso Quarry Park. The five-kilometre run will demand endurance to trudge through hills and valleys, splash through the park, overcome uncompromising team obstacles and sludge through dirt and mud. "H.E.R.O.S. is all about the element of surprise," said Lisa Dale, fundraising coordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society's Halton unit. "We want to challenge you, engage you and ultimately test your limits for a good cause." Participants can register as an individual or as a team. All participants must be 14 years or older on Aug. 17. Registration is now open online at www. cancer.ca/heros. The early bird registration fee of $75 will be available until July 17. The Canadian Cancer Society's Wheels of Hope Transportation Program features volunteer drivers who provide cancer patients rides to their cancer-related treatments, free of charge. Last year, the Society's 138 Halton volunteer drivers assisted 550 local cancer patients, including supporting 28 families with a child with cancer. More than 9,400 trips were provided free of charge and 307,000 kilometres were travelled to area cancer treatment centres.
