At least that's the case for Oakville's Jordan Pires, 8, who for the past four years has been going to Windrush Stables in Moffat, near Milton, a non-pro t charitable organization that offers one-on-one therapeutic horseback riding lessons to children and adults with a physical or developmental disability. Jordan has cerebellar atrophy, which affects her balance and motor skills, leaving her unable to walk or stand independently. Jordan's doctors have been unable to pin down exactly what has caused her condition and as a result, there's no real treatment for her. "We were always told since she was born, she would never sit, stand, crawl, but yet she learned how to do all those things, she just did them see The on p.13 Jordan Pires, 8, and her instructor Jen Pearson present Timmy with the Horse of the Year honour at Windrush Stables near Milton. Halton police say they will be stepping up their patrols of Oakville's parks over the summer to combat any illegal activity taking place there. Illegal drug and alcohol use tends to increase in the parks as the weather gets warmer, said police in a news release Tuesday. The stepped-up enforcement is in response to results of a community survey, made public in November 2012, showing that one of the major issues of residents was safety in public parks. During daylight hours, 97 per cent of respondents reported they felt safe in public parks, but that number dropped to 67 per cent after dark, according to police. Project Nightwatch kicked off this week with of cers now conducting patrols of the parks in both uniform and plainclothes. Police said they will be focusing their efforts on people consuming alcohol and drugs, and engaged in other criminal and provincial offences. Of cers will also be enforcing Town of Oakville bylaws. Police said the intent is to eliminate drug and alcohol consumption and the crime associated with them and maintain public safety.
