Like many residents, I always felt it was an unnecessary issue our community had to face. It was clear from the beginning that the power plant proposed by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) was too close to homes and schools. The OPA, tasked with selecting and managing these facilities had successfully placed 17 power plants around the province but got the one in Oakville very wrong. I was surprised to discover that no rules existed in Ontario on where these large polluters could be located. To address this legislative gap, I brought forward a Private Members' Bill (PMB) advocating for a separation distance. This PMB will be part of the ongoing consultations by the Ministry of Energy on local energy plans. I do understand a new facility will be built in a safe and suitable location and there are costs and savings associated with an obviously different proposal. I look forward to the Provincial Auditor's report due this summer. My main focus all along was to ensure the power plant never got built in an illogical location close to Oakville homes and schools. I want to ensure no other community in our province has to face an unwanted power plant in such a poor site and that no cancellation fees are given out in the future. Premier Wynne agrees with that. I only wish the opposition parties did as well. A recent Oakville Beaver editorial asked why the Premier's proposal for an all-party committee to learn and apply the lessons from Oakville never happened. The answer: Opposition parties would not support the formation of the committee.
