Trudeau calling for a national education strategy by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Friday, June 21, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau called for a national education strategy and greater transparency in government Thursday, during a presentation at the Speers Road Operating Engineers Training Institute of Ontario (OETIO). Trudeau's visit began with him trying out a crane simulator before trying his hand at the operation of an actual crane. After moving a concrete block fairly close to its target and knocking over just one pylon, Trudeau and a handful of media, both national and local, adjourned to an auditorium where the Liberal leader spoke about the importance of ensuring Canadians are able to get the job training they need to succeed. "The fact of the matter is that even though the Canadian economy is growing really well --- we've grown more than 100 per cent over the past 30 years, more than double in size -- average family incomes have increased by only 13 per cent," said Trudeau. "The people working hardest for their money, day in and day out, haven't had much of a raise over a generation and that's what's got to change. We have to make sure we are investing in the best jobs possible for the largest number of people," he said, adding that's why he -- through the leadership campaign and into the 2015 election trail -- continues to emphasize a national strategy on education. Trudeau acknowledged education is under provincial jurisdiction and said he would not impose a federal vision on provinces, but noted building a partnership in the area is important. He said that if in future, seven out of 10 jobs are going to require some form of post-secondary education, then seven out of 10 people need to achieve such training. "That's why I've chosen to set 70 per cent as the target for post-secondary achievement in this country," Trudeau told a room filled with OETIO apprentices. The Liberal leader said the Conservative government is making the wrong decisions regarding skills training, noting it is currently advertising a program that is not slated to begin for years. As a federal election looms in two years, I disclosed all my personal incomes, the personal inheritance from my father and all my financial details. I did this in a way that is above and beyond anything that is required of any politician, including the prime minister. I did this in a way that is above and beyond anything required of any politician, including the prime minister," said Trudeau. "I have a level of openness and disclosure that has led to a lot of people looking in and picking certain things to attack me on. Even so, I prefer to position myself in a place that says, `This is who I am, this is what I've done, this is what I do, this is how I am going to go about it.'" Trudeau is calling for the proactive and public disclosure of the expenses of the Senate and the House of Commons, including detailed travel and hospitality expenses. He said he hopes that by doing so, the government would avoid some of the mistakes of the past. Trudeau said he believes nothing real is being offered through that advertised program and even if it were made a reality earlier, the provinces, he said, have voiced concerns that it really just reallocates existing funds. Trudeau said having the federal government involved in skills training makes sense because no matter where people receive their training, they go where the work is. He explained that could serve as a disincentive for a province, including Ontario, to invest too much in skills-training programs, if graduates simply leave for other provinces. Trudeau also spoke about the importance of transparency in government, stating he has already opened his own financial records to public scrutiny.
