Ethnic enclaves may challenge Canada's cultural mosaic by Cate Laurie Grade 12, Iroquois Ridge H.S. thnic enclaves, which are prominent in the city of Toronto and its surrounding areas, provide newcomers to Canada with a sense of belonging and familiarity. An ethnic enclave is defined as a neighbourhood, which holds a certain cultural distinction. Though locations such as Chinatown are commonly viewed as tourist destinations today, this has not always been the case. During the Second World War, Hitler's regime physically moved Jewish and other non-Aryan people in Europe in order to contain them. In the mid-20th century, in the U.S., enclaves were popular all over the country for African Americans -- low-paying jobs and the creation of ghettos contributed to segregation and discrimination. People of a multicultural society, such as Canada's, may see the term ethnic enclave in a positive light as it indicates cross-cultural interaction and a niche for citizens. On the other hand, the term may have a negative connotation to those experiencing discrimination and who feel they cannot mix with other cultures/societies around them. 7 | Friday, June 28, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com E For newcomers, they may not be sure of where to go other than an existing enclave of their nationality and culture, and that may limit their engagement with society as a whole. Though ethnic enclaves provide a mix of cultures, essential when representing a multicultural society, they also provide a comfort zone for people who are not being exposed to Canadian society and other cultures part of our national cultural mosaic. A mosaic is a collection of little items or segments that make up one big picture. If cultures continue to clump together into enclaves, Canada will no longer be a mosaic, it will be a collage of cultures that are separated, defined areas for everyone with little crosscultural interaction. Imagine a Canada with different areas for each nationality -- dividing a country to that extent would be nearly impossible. Ethnic enclaves are good on a small scale, for they allow for the presence of other cultures, within a country, but the emergence of large-scale enclaves may threaten Canada's cultural mosaic.
