Oakville Dr. Helene Grubisa SHARON ROEBBELEN Director of Admissions and Communications KING'S CHRISTIAN COLLEGIATE Q: Why are my teeth crowded or getting more crowded and what can I do about it? A: Dental crowding can be related to any number of factors: 1.Large teeth, small jaws (genetics) 2.Premature loss of primary (baby) teeth 3.Habits 4.Age Dental crowding can be corrected with orthodontic treatment using braces or removable appliances like InvisalignTM. There are various ways of making space in the jaws including expansion and possibly tooth removal. Dental crowding almost always becomes worse with age. Research shows that crowding progresses with normal age related changes such as wrinkles and gray hair. This is true whether you have had orthodontic treatment or not and isn't related to the presence of wisdom teeth. Because we now understand this fact of life, retainers are often permanent, particularly for the lower front teeth. Many of our orthodontic consultations are prompted by family dentists, parents and children in response to crowded teeth. It is never too late to correct that crowded smile. Q: What can I do to help my teen make the most of the summer and prepare for the next year of high school? physical rigours of the academic year. But that doesn't mean they can't be sharpening their cognitive and physical skills in other ways. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Most high schools require only one semester of Physical Education, and less than a quarter of students typically participate in school sports. The summer is the perfect time to compensate by trying new sports and enjoying the benefits of fresh air and physical activity. Learn a new sport, ride a bike or join a team just get away from the screen and play outside! VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY: High school students need to earn 40 hours of Community Service, beginning on July 1 preceding Grade 9. Many universities and employers look favourably upon students who exceed this minimum expectation. Tracking forms, signed by the student's supervisor, are usually available on high school websites. LOOKING AHEAD: If students know what books they are studying in English next year, they can read a few of them and watch their movie adaptations. Most English courses include one Shakesperean work reading ahead and seeing a play are great ways to prepare. THE BEST ADVICE: The most important thing to do is to stay physically and mentally active, which should give your teen that extra advantage toward learning in the fall. 528 Burnhamthorpe Rd. W.
