St. Luke earns silver at Catholic softball tournament The St. Luke Gators won five of six games at a recent Catholic elementary school softball tournament hosted by Our Lady of Peace, earning silver. St. Luke posted victories over Pope John Paul (112), Our Lady of Peace (3-1), St. Andrew (9-3) and St. Peter (15-2) in round-robin play, then defeated Our Lady of Peace 7-5 in the semis before falling 8-0 to St. Mark in the final. "I want to be able to build our club and to be able to offer athletes the opportuntiy to focus on sprint events if that's what they need. It will keep those athletes involved in the sport, training appropriately for those events and allowing them to have other interests." Thompson previously served as head coach of the Halton Hills Blue Fins since 2008, helping athletes make numerous national and provincial teams. He received the CSCTA Speedo Coaching Excellence Award following the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. Last April, he received the Coaches of Ontario Good To Great Coach Award. "I'm really thrilled to join such a successful club and a staff of unbelievable coaches," said Thompson, who will begin his new role in September. "Right now, I need to be part of something like this to enhance my knowledge. I want to be able to learn from Sean and the other coaches, and add some of those skills to my tool box while adding my own skills to theirs. The local trio is suiting up for the Dog River Howlers Rugby Club, which won bronze at the tournament last year. National sides from the Netherlands and Monaco are also participating, as are multiple sides from Germany and France. Canadian coach Shane Thompson said he is more concerned about developing players than winning the tournament. "Hopefully this is part of their pathway to get (to the national teams)," said Thompson, a former Rugby Canada player. Coldwells, Elliot and Scott are members of local rugby academy Upright Rugby, run by Abbey Park High School teacher Tyler Leggatt. Upright Rugby affiliated with the Howlers several years ago in order to provide its young talent more competitive opportunities. Dan Mathie, Connor Giles, Liam Grimes, Chris Woodhead, Charli Mocon, Danielle Spice, Owen Brombal, Djustice SearsDuru, Christian Grillo and Kieran Smerdon are other Upright Rugby products who have played for the Howlers in the past.
