J. Richard Werkman CHIROPODIST E-mail practice violated law continued from p.1 hold governments to account if potentially important documents are destroyed. Flynn agreed the actions were wrong and should never have happened, but noted it is important for the public to know exactly what happened. "In this case, the gentleman who is being accused by the information and privacy officer owned up to the fact that he did delete these things. He thought he was doing his job basically. It's not like someone discovered they were deleted. He was asked for them and said, `I deleted them. I thought that's what you did,'" said Flynn. "He's claiming he deleted things on an ongoing basis, which is something I do at home. I don't keep my inbox full, I don't put things on a hard drive. To make sure I'm not dealing with thousands of e-mails, I try to keep it current. The problem is you can't do that when you are working for a ministry." Cavoukian said it is unbelievable MacLennan, who served under energy ministers Brad Duguid and Chris Bentley, would have no understanding that there are legal requirements to keep records of public policy decisions like power plant closures. Members of the opposition took another view. "Under Dalton McGuinty and Kathleen Wynne, the Liberals have shown time and time again that they will do anything to hide their scandals to protect their political power," said Nipissing Progressive Conservative MPP Vic Fedeli. "It is quite frightening that the Liberals have no problem destroying government documents It seems to me the opposition here is just concentrating on having a witch hunt. What we are trying to do is make sure what almost happened in Oakville never happens again in any community, including in NDP and PC ridings. The PCs are calling on the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to launch a formal investigation into what they are calling the theft of taxpayer property and the breach of trust by a public official. Cavoukian said she "cannot state with certainty there was inappropriate deletion... to avoid transparency and accountability" as McGuinty's staff transitioned the premier's office to Wynne, but found "the e-mail management practices of the former premier's office were in "violation of the obligations set out in the ARA." Flynn said Premier Kathleen Wynne has offered to sit down with Cavoukian and discuss the report to make sure members of the government are now doing things properly. The Oakville MPP said the government has also taken a number of steps to ensure all political staff members know their responsibilities with regard to proper record keeping. Flynn advised residents not to shy away from their elected representative as a result of this scandal. "I wouldn't want people to be afraid to come to my constituency office for help on a personal issue. I wouldn't want them to think, `I'm not going in there to ask for help for my kid on a mental health issue or health issue because some day it will be splashed all over the newspaper before some committee that is on a witch hunt," said Flynn. "People should feel safe and secure that when they deal with my office, their information is going to be held in confidence and cannot be dragged out in public before a committee." With regard to getting to the bottom of what happened with the power plants, Flynn said, his government has offered to put together a select committee composed of all three parties and provide the opposition parties with all the documents from all ministries pertaining to the power plants. Both, he said, were turned down. "It seems to me the opposition here is just concentrating on having a Deadline: June 14, 2013 witch hunt. What we are trying to do Launch Date: June 27, 2013 is make sure what almost happened in Oakville never happens again in For further information & to apply contact: any community, including in NDP and PC ridings," said Flynn.
