The achievements of individuals like Tecumseh, the Shawnee leader who fought alongside the British in the War of 1812, are whispered. Stories like the Oka Crisis are rarely discussed. What I am trying to say is that the First Nations have a place in Canadian history and deserve respect and recognition. Yet, what we are taught in our public schools is just the opposite. It comes down to this: children are being given so little information that they instead rely on stereotypes of the original peoples of this nation, and we are the ones suffering from it.
