Honouring a community hero continued from p.6 received news that Dona was in the hospital and had been for weeks. Upon hearing the news about her counsellor, Ida immediately went out to purchase a rosary to bring to Dona, who is a devout Catholic. Ida had very specific requirements for this rosary. It couldn't just be any rosary; it had to be a red rosary. She desperately wanted the rosary to show Dona how far she had come in her healing journey and what better way to do that than to give her a gift in the colour she once could not stand to look at. After purchasing the rosary she could only barely afford, Ida then walked almost an hour to the hospital to visit her former counsellor. Only this time, she wasn't there for advice or support from Dona, she was there to be a friend. Since Dona has been hospitalized, Ida has been a constant source of comfort for her, giving back to the woman who gave her the confidence to be a happy woman again. The two women have talked and laughed together. Ida has brushed Dona's hair, rubbed her feet, and been a friend and confidante to the woman who once sat with her during her time of need. It isn't clear how much time Dona has, but what is clear is the tremendous healing effect Dona has had on Ida, who can now confidently look into the eyes of her former counsellor and mentor with deep appreciation and love. The lives of many women including Ida have been deeply touched by this incredible 7 | Friday, June 14, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Dona Reid woman.
