Food not just about feeding hunger but nourishing soul Y ou know the feeling... you step in the front door of your home and a wave of comfort and completeness washes over you. The aroma of a pot of simmering tomato sauce coming from the kitchen makes its way towards you bringing with it some of the most vivid and tangible memories of your childhood. Is there anything more powerful? The excitement and anticipation drawn by theses captivating scents are not solely tied to eating a delicious meal, but rather the entire holistic experience of eating together as a family. In spite of all the modern conveniences and technology at our disposal today, we are spending less and less time at the table together as a family. I know this because I am guilty of it myself. Even as a chef and restaurateur I face these same challenges. We need to give ourselves permission to slow down, permission to return to the table. It would be my pleasure to share with you some of my favourite recipes that are simple and delicious like our featured peach crisp that is guaranteed to bring your family back together in the kitchen. On their own, ripe and juicy peaches are a healthy treat. Baking them with oatmeal and a bit of brown sugar raises peaches to a whole new taste level. They are high in fibre and potassium, and one peach contains 42 per cent of a child's required vitamin A intake. Vitamin A helps in eyesight development; great for all the books your eight-year-old will be reading this summer. Did you know a Finnish study suggests that oats may reduce the risk of asthma in children? At the very least, they help reduce bad cholesterol and blood pressure. Served warm, this peach crisp can certainly be savoured without any guilt. 7 | Friday, July 5, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Topping · 2 cups quick oats · ½ cup melted butter · ¼ cup brown sugar · ¼ cup whole wheat flour · ½ tsp cinnamon Mix together and then crumble evenly over peaches.
